More Boilermate problems

11th June 2006

Our hot water gradually started failing again after about 6 weeks of pure bliss. The symptoms were the same fluctuating water temperatures that we had before. Just less extreme in both the duration of the cold swings and the intensity.

This time, I couldn’t diagnose the issue from the self-tests. So, we put up with it and put up with it until no more could be taken.

I rang up Gledhill and started up a tirade, basically explaining that they needed to start getting together a strategy for post-sales (especially post-guarantee) support. I suggested a register of Gledhill experienced plumbers, or a web based bulletin board. I got nowhere, except a phone number of a guy in Southend who may be able to help.

Someone in the office who overheard my call suggested that I phone “PG Bones Ltd” in Braintree as they were the firm doing Boilermate installations for Wimpy Homes where he lived.

So, we gave them a call, and in no time we had a guy out who sorted the problem out within half an hour. Brilliant.

The problem was that the other sensor (the DHW sensor) had also failed, so we must have had a couple from a faulty batch.

A few weeks on and everything is still fantastic, shower nirvana, lovely.

Hi i am having a hot water problem with my boilermate 3. start with hot and going cold for few seconds. after reading this blog as well as the installation manual, I have done the basic checks. PCB Started making a noise when the hot water tap is open but DHW pump would not run? found the AC supply for the DHW pump is around 175V AC with the hot water tap open.pump working fine with the direct supply. all the sensors are reading fine too. tried to re-commission the unit, but when i turn the power on the display shows 888 and it wont go through automatic commissioning steps. can anybody help….please
    many thanks

boilermate 2000 switch low voltage to heating pump

The heating from my boilermate 2000 switch has gone faulty and the heating pump is intermittent buzzing. I can listen and hear the pump trying to start but never gets going full on. When I switch to emergency setting the pump works fine and the heating works perfect for as long as the system is on emergency. When I switch back to normal operation the pump works for a minute and then begins to buzz again. A plumber diagnosed a faulty pump and said the bearing were overheating causing it to stall. The pump has been changed but the faullt remains. I noticed the voltage across terminal T12 and T14 which connect to the pump is varying between 80V and 240V. the Glsdhill help line said this should be steady 240V and the Appliance Control Board must be fault. The ACB retails at around £315 and i don’t want to spend more money only to find the fault is not fixed. Can you tell me if this type of fault is common and does anybody know where I might get the board repaired.

    Buzzing pump

    Hi Stuart,

I wouldn’t expect the central heating pump to be voltage controlled, and also after having the pump changed and exhibiting the same symptoms I would trust the diagnosis from Gledhill.

I sympathise greatly about not wanting to spend money and not have the fault fixed, especially at that sort of expense. Unfortunately, PCB repair seems to be a dying art as it is usually not cost effective with today’s labour rates.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

    boilermate 2000

I have a boilermate 2000 and the heating is not working. I replaced the thermostat as that had broken. When I called someone out they said the pump was faulty. The pump has now been replaced but it is still not working. On the control board there are only two green led lights coming on, the one for the boiler and the one for the water but the one for the heating is out. Can you tell me what the problem might be.

Boilermat III - Hot Water Problems

    Hi,

Looking for some help to diagnose a problem with our boilermate III. Ten days ago, we suddenly started getting problems with our hot water. You would get an initial burst of hot water for about 20 seconds, and then it would go cold and not heat up. The central heating is fine, and is unaffected.

We called out an engineer, and they said it was the blender, which they replaced. This made absolutly no difference. So they said they thought it was heat exchanger and have just replaced that, but the problem has not gone away. Although it is slightly different. You can now run the hot water tap at a low flow rate and it will maintain hot water, but as soon as you put a normal flow rate through it goes cold again. We’ve checked the PCB and there are no errors, and you see the DHW temp plummet from mid 50’s down to 20’s when the tap is turned on. Don’t think it is the sensor as you can hear the pump turn on. This just doesn’t seem to make any difference.

The latest idea from the engineer is that it is sludge causing the problem. Do you think this likely? They are talking about flushing out the system, which I know is expensive.

Any advice you can give would be greatly received.

    Boilermate 2000

I have a Boilermate 2000 that is just over 2 years old. The heating system has stopped working, but the hot water is fine. When I turn the switch to emergency heating it heats the radiators straight away. Does anyone have any ideas what the cause may be before I call out a plumber to fix it.

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Hot water but no heating.

Hi, I was wondering what the problem was with your boilermate, as I have just had the same thing happen to me? The only difference being that my boilermate is a model II and I don’t have a emergency heating on my timer.
    Thanks.

    I’m afraid Gledhill went

I’m afraid Gledhill went bust on Friday October 17th. However, I am attempting to build a section on our website where owners of Gledhill boilers can get help and advice by contacting an engineer local to them. We are in Reading, Berkshire. We work on most Gledhills, but not all. Primarily we replace the heat exchnagers due to heavy limescale deposits. You may notice this from poor hot water flow, or poor heat to the hot water, or both. We work on many PulsaCoils (usually faulty sensors or immersion heaters). See http://www.scalgon.co.uk

    Regards,
    Barry
